Even though it came in setback fashion, Morehead State rifle opened its 2020-21 season Friday with a solid showing at Murray State. The Eagles dropped the match 4674-4649 but displayed several personal bests and scored 37 points more in this season opener than the previous season.

The Eagles totaled 2339 in Air Rifle and 2310 in Smallbore. The host Racers nipped the visitors slightly in Smallbore with a 2319 and scored a 2355 on the Air range.

Junior Katie Frye paced the Eagles with an 1168 aggregate score, second best for all shooters Friday. Frye's final tally was a personal high, while her 583 in Smallbore was also a personal best. She fashioned a 191 standing total in Smallbore to tie her personal best. She also fired a 585 in Air Rifle.

Junior Erin Diehl led the squad in Air with a 590 and also turned in a 576 in Smallbore with her 199 prone tying her high-water mark. Sophomore Grace Weber also rewrote her personal records with a 589 in Air Rifle (tie) and a 574 in Smallbore, which is her personal best. Her combined total of 1163 is a personal standard as well, while a 198 in kneeling Smallbore hadn't been accomplished by her before today.

Junior Amber Schifano and freshman Sally Reeke both fired 575 in Air Rifle, establishing Reeke's personal standard in her first career collegiate match. While not on the counting squad, sophomore Elizabeth Plecity carded a 580 on the Air gun, and she had a 575 while on the squad for Smallbore. Sophomore Bryce Ward totaled a 576 in Smallbore.

Senior Ryan Hinson fired a 575 in Air and a 568 in Smallbore.

Diehl, Frye, Schifano, Ward and Weber all recorded at least one perfect 100 target on the day during their relay.

Morehead State returns to action right away on Saturday, facing UT Martin at Murray's Pat Spurgin Range. The match begins at 10 a.m. ET.
