In an effort to support local organizations and give surplus furnishings a second life, Morehead State University is donating furniture from former Cartmell Hall to eligible nonprofit and government agencies throughout the region.
Cartmell Hall, a 16-story residence hall built in 1969 and named for Dr. William H. Cartmell, served generations of students before closing as a residence hall in spring 2027.
The University is working with area organizations to identify needs and coordinate donations. Churches, community organizations, and resource centers from across the region have reached out seeking items for their programs and facilities.
“The response has been overwhelming,” said Andrea Stone (Class of 2008, 2011), director of Procurement Services. “Our mission calls on us to serve our communities to improve the quality of life, and this collaboration is a unique way to fulfill that commitment. By placing these furnishings with organizations that directly serve people throughout our region, we are extending the impact of resources that supported students for many years while helping meet important community needs.”
The donation effort is being conducted in accordance with Kentucky law governing surplus property. Kentucky statute requires that surplus property generally be disposed of through public sale. However, donations may be made to qualifying nonprofit organizations and government agencies. As a result, furniture from Cartmell Hall is available only to eligible nonprofit and governmental entities.

“We are grateful for the strong community interest and partnership demonstrated throughout the process,” said Stone. “We look forward to placing as many items as possible with organizations that will continue serving the region.”
