OVC Champions! Rifle Rises to the Pinnacle to Win First-Ever League Title

MSU Athletics

For the first time in program history, Morehead State Rifle has risen to the pinnacle of the Ohio Valley Conference.

After winning the 2019-20 Smallbore title on Saturday, the Eagles claimed the overall championship on Sunday as the teams competed at UT Martin.

Morehead State fired a 2293 in Smallbore and added a 2350 in Air Rifle on the final day for a winning aggregate of 4643. The Air lineup included all women and was a school standard for an all women's squad. MSU upended perennial champion Murray State, which had won four straight, by nine points.

In addition to the overall trophy, the team took home some additional hardware.

Newcomer Elizabeth Plecity was voted the OVC Freshman of the Year as well as earning Second-Team All-OVC Smallbore and All-Newcomer Smallbore. Senior Alexa Potts repeated as a First-Team All-OVC performer on both guns. Two others earned First-Team honors with sophomore Amber Schifano in Air and junior Ryan Hinson in Smallbore.

Senior Karly Potts was tabbed Second-Team All-Conference in Air, while first-year shooters Grace Weber (Air) and Bryce Ward (Smallbore) earned All-Newcomer nods.

In the match, Schifano tied her career-best and led the team with a 590 Air score. Alexa Potts shot a 589 with her sister coming in just behind at 587. Sophomore Erin Diehl turned in a 584, and Weber fashioned a 581.

On the Smallbore range, Alexa Potts' 577 was the team high, followed by Hinson at 576 and Plecity at 575. Plecity had her best-ever kneeling score of 194 and tied her prone best at 198. Ward carded a 565, while Schifano rounded out the title scores at 560.

The team continues its 2020 portion of the schedule on Saturday at home versus VMI. The NCAA Qualifier, which counts significantly toward NCAA berth opportunities, is on Feb. 22 at Kentucky.
