Women's Basketball Claims First Victory of the Petree Era, 72-53 Over Midway (Ky.)

MSU Athletics

Morehead State opened their home schedule with a win, as they stormed past Midway (KY) to a 72-53 victory. The win was the first of the season for the Eagles, and the first Division 1 victory for head coach Cayla Petree.

"One is one too many and one more is never enough," said Petree after the game. "When I woke up this morning I had never won a Division 1 game, but let's try and get this win on Wednesday and have a happy Thanksgiving."

Morehead State dominated the glass, outrebounding Midway 54-39, including 28 offensive rebounds leading to 21 second chance points. The performance on the glass and the Eagles offense as a whole was led once again by junior Lauren Carter, who recorded her second double-double in as many games with 20 points, 17 rebounds, a career high six assists, six steals and three blocks.

The Eagles also received double figure scoring from graduate student Julan McDonald, who posted the first double-double of her Morehead State career with 10 points and 10 rebounds, fellow graduate student Terri Smith, who finished with 15 points, and sophomore Jada Claude, who added 11 points.

The Eagles controlled play early, due in large part to Carter, who scored 12 of Morehead State's first 18 points, as the Eagles tough defense forced Midway into 10 turnovers while holding them to only 14 points.

Midway used an extended scoring drought from Morehead State to take a 23-21 lead halfway through the 2nd quarter, but Morehead State answered back with authority, using a 14-2 run to take a 35-25 lead into the locker room.

The Eagles continued their momentum and put the game away in the third quarter, their best segment of the game, as they held Midway without a made field goal throughout the entire quarter and ballooned their lead up to 20.

Morehead State heads to the road for four straight games, beginning with a stop in Moon Township, PA., to take on Robert Morris, Wednesday at 1:00 PM ET.
