Shay Steele's Double-Double Propels Women's Basketball Past UT Martin, 89-68

MSU Athletics

Morehead State women's basketball (12-3, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) defeated UT Martin (4-11, 1-1 OVC) 89-68 on Saturday night at the Elam Center, snapping a 27-game OVC home winning streak for the Skyhawks.

"I couldn't be happier for our group," said head coach Greg Todd. "We really took care of business."

The Eagles were once again led by a quintet of prolific scorers, headed by a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double from senior Shay Steele. Miranda Crockett followed closely behind with 14 points and nine boards, while adding two steals to Steele's season-high four blocks.

Eriel McKee led all scorers with 18 (on 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line), complemented by six rebounds and two steals. Brianna McQueen logged 17 points in 22 minutes off the bench, thanks in part to back-to-back three-pointers in a fourth quarter dominated 27-10 by the Eagles.

Senior reserve KayK Tate - whose hometown of Dyersburg, Tenn. resides less than 50 miles from Martin - contributed 13 points to an Eagles bench that outscored the Skyhawks, 32-23.

"It was a very productive game for KayK," Todd said. "We had a really good balance overall."

Morehead State entered the final period with a closely contested four-point lead, as the back-and-forth contest saw 10 lead changes and 11 ties up to that point. But the Eagles scored 13 unanswered to open the fourth quarter, with UT Martin junior Janekia Mason ultimately stopping the bleeding via a two-point jumper with 5:24 to go.

Morehead State dominated points in the paint 58-36, and outscored UTM 33-14 in the fast break. With the victory, the Eagles have won seven consecutive games for the first time since 2006-07. MSU will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 5 when Eastern Illinois (5-9, 1-1 OVC) visits Johnson Arena at 5:30 p.m. ET.
