Eagle Soccer Ends in Scoreless Tie at Xavier

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State soccer team doubled up Xavier in shots-on-goal Friday night (Sept. 19), but neither team found the back of the net in a 0-0, double-overtime tie at the Xavier Soccer Complex.

It marked the first scoreless tie for the MSU program since Sept. 30, 2011. The Eagles moved to 5-1-3 overall, while the Musketeers are now 3-5-2.

"I felt we played our best technical match of the season," Head Coach Warren Lipka said. "We ran into a tough team tonight in Xavier, but we got our second shutout this year, and I am happy for that."

Morehead State peppered the Xavier net with 16 total shots, including 10 on-goal. Xavier managed 11 total shots and five on-target. Musketeer goalkeeper Katie Markesbery halted nine MSU shots.

"We definitely had our chances," Lipka said. "Sometimes it drives coaches crazy to have that many chances and not be able to score, but that is how college soccer is sometimes. We played extremely hard, and I am proud of them."

Senior forwards Jade Flory and Macy Cobb led the squad with three shots apiece. Junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Floyd rejected three Xavier attempts.

Morehead State, which leads the Ohio Valley Conference in corner kicks, generated seven tonight while only surrendering one corner opportunity for the hosts.

MSU finishes its weekend road trip at Wright State today (Sept. 21) at 1 p.m.
