Wayne Martin’s athletic journey began in the halls of Clark County High School, where he graduated in 1964, before setting foot on the campus of Morehead State University—the first step in what would become a remarkable and multifaceted career spanning decades.
A two-time MSU graduate, Martin quickly made his mark on the sidelines, first as head coach at Pikeville High School and later leading the University of Pikeville to three national tournament appearances. But for Eagle fans, his story only gets better.
In 1978, Martin returned to his alma mater, taking the reins as Morehead State’s ninth head basketball coach. Over the next nine seasons, he built a program of grit and determination, culminating in back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances—including a thrilling opening-round victory in the 1984 NCAA Tourney.
Yet, basketball was just one chapter of Martin’s extraordinary career. In 1989, he transitioned to the world of broadcasting, joining Gray Television, where his leadership and vision propelled him to the role of president and general manager of WKYT-TV in Lexington.
His legacy, both on and off the court, has been cemented in Morehead State history. In 1995, he was inducted into the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2017, he received the university’s highest alumni honor—the Distinguished Alumni Award. And today, he is still serving his alma mater as a member of the school’s Board of Regents.
From the hardwood to the newsroom, Wayne Martin’s journey is a testament to leadership, excellence, and an unwavering connection to Morehead State.
