Eagles Crack Century Mark and Soar Over Brescia

The Morehead State women's basketball team scored 47 points off of turnovers on the way to a 104-54 victory against the Brescia Bearcats Wednesday evening.

The Eagles had four players score in double figures, led by Crystal Corley, who had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sophie Baydanov added 15 points, four assists and three steals off the bench and Veronica Charles helped out with 15 points, four assists and seven steals.

Morehead State utilized fantastic ball movement in Wednesday's game, piling up 26 assists on 36 made field goals. Individually, Sandra Lin was on top of the distribution list for the Eagles with six assists and Melissa Secchiaroli also contributed with four assists of her own.

Morehead State forced 37 Brescia turnovers while committing 16 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Eagles turned those takeaways into 47 points on the offensive end of the floor. Charles' seven steals led the way for Morehead State.

The Eagles return to action Friday against Evansville. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM and can be found on ESPN+ or listened to on the Eagle Sports Radio Network.

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Morehead State went on a 7-0 run with 7:41 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Sophie Benharouga, to take a 9-2 lead. The Eagles then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-7 advantage. Morehead State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Morehead State built that first quarter lead to 25-11 before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 7:24 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Janay Rose, to increase its lead to 31-11. The Eagles proceeded to tack on eight points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-18 advantage heading into halftime. Morehead State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 26 points.

Following intermission, Morehead State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 56-24 before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Tolisha Walker, to expand its lead further to 64-24 with 5:17 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Eagles added five points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 77-32 edge. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 31 points in the paint.

Morehead State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 92-41 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Corley's layup, to grow the lead to 99-41 with 4:26 to go in the contest. The Bearcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Eagles still cruised the rest of the way for the 104-54 win. Morehead State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 27 points in the paint.
