Eagle Runners in Contention for OVC Championships Saturday in Missouri

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State cross country teams will vie for Ohio Valley Conference titles on Saturday when the league hosts its championship races in Missouri.

Southeast Missouri is hosting this year's event, the first time for SEMO hosting since 2008. The women's 5K race is set for 10 a.m. ET with the men's 8K to follow at 11 a.m.

The Eagle men came closest last year to knocking off perennial champion Eastern Kentucky in the last 12 seasons, and the Eagles are in a good spot to do so again this year. MSU is coming off a third place finish among 42 teams two weekends ago at the Royals Challenge.

Senior Justin Moakler, a two-time First-Team All-OVC runner, boasts the second fastest 8K time in the league this year, running the Royals Challenge in 23:46 to shave 10 seconds off his previously set school record. He is the only Eagle man to ever run sub-24 minutes in an official race. Junior Aaron Wier is familiar with all OVC competition too, having been tabbed Second-Team All-OVC in 2017.

On the women's side, the Eagles will look for an All-OVC effort for the first time since 2014. Redshirt sophomore Sierra Poppell looks to have the best shot to do so. She shattered the school record by 30 seconds last time out at the Royals Challenge. That is the second-best 5K time in the league this year.

Junior Caitlin Cunningham also has a nice chance at being all-conference. She owns the fifth top time in the OVC this year, running the Royals Challenge in 17:27. That would have broken the previous MSU school record and is now the second fastest 5K performance in program history.

Results will be available on the live link above and here on MSUEagles.com following both races.
