Matt Schabert, who has been at Morehead State University since 2005, has been promoted to director of athletic media relations.
He will oversee all aspects of the athletic media relations operation, including all social media sites, publications, record keeping and interaction with local, regional and national media. Schabert will also oversee and direct all aspects of the official website for athletics, MSUEagles.com, and assist with video operations.
"It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the media relations department," he said. "I am proud of what our department has accomplished since I have been here, and I have seen and continue to embrace the ever-changing digital world. I also feel we have excellent relationships with our local and regional media and will continue to cultivate those relationships as well as strive to tell the story of our student-athletes, coaches, fans and administrators. I am proud of our current staff and look forward to leading them beginning this season. I have been loyal to Morehead State, and I know there are many exciting things in store for the future of our athletic department."
While at MSU, Schabert has successfully nominated more than 20 student-athletes for CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-America honors. He has also helped publicize more than 20 athletes who have won major conference athletic awards and has publicized nine teams who have made NCAA Tournament appearances.
Morehead State has also risen to the top of the OVC in social media followers, exponentially growing the department's Twitter audience to more than 30,000 followers.
Schabert is a 2002 graduate of Tennessee Tech University. He served as a student assistant at TTU from 1998-2002 while earning his bachelor's degree in English-journalism.
He came to MSU following a year as the assistant sports information director at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he handled media relations and radio play-by-play duties for women's basketball and baseball in 2004-05. The Roadrunners' baseball team advanced to the NCAA Waco Regional that season.
Schabert spent the 2003-04 school year as a sports information intern at Virginia Tech, where he served as the primary contact for an NCAA Tournament-qualifying men's soccer team, women's soccer, and swimming and diving. He also was the media coordinator at the 2003 Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympic Games in Detroit, Mich.
He is a member of College Sports Information Directors of America and has attended more than 10 summer workshops for that organization. Schabert has an 18-year-old son, Jacob, who attends Morehead State.
