Morehead State has finalized its 2017 beach volleyball schedule, which includes eight regular season dates. The inaugural slate will include matches against five teams ranked in the final 2016 DiG Collegiate Beach Volleyball Poll.
"During our trip to Florida, we'll have a chance to compete against some established programs," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "Overall, it's a tough schedule, but we are looking to gain experience and continue improving."
The regular season slate begins on Friday, March 17 at the Stetson Beach Invitational Tournament in Tavares, Fla., when the Eagles open against a host of teams, including No. 7 Georgia State, No. 8 Stetson, No. 18 New Mexico, Jacksonville State, and Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.).
The Eagles will follow up their first tournament by playing a series of dual matches during their Florida swing. Opponents include Jacksonville and Webber International (Fla.). The Eagles conclude their Florida road trip with the Eckerd College Battle on the Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.
During the Eckerd College Battle on the Bay, the Eagles will face No. 13 Florida International, No. 19 Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville State, Huntingdon (Ala.), and host Eckerd (Fla.) College.
The regular season concludes with familiar foes, as the Eagles compete in a tournament at Austin Peay on April 7-8. Opponents will include UAB, Louisiana Monroe, and Ohio Valley Conference foes UT Martin and Austin Peay.
"During our trip to Clarksville, Tenn., we face two familiar opponents, but in a new setting," said Gordon. "After years of taking on Austin Peay and UT Martin on the court, it'll be unique to see them in the sand."
Morehead State will compete as an independent during the 2017 season.
"Beach sets Morehead State apart as the only university in Kentucky to offer the sport. The game is growing at the club level, and it will be a great opportunity for a lot of local athletes to stay close to home," Gordon added.
The NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships are scheduled for May 5-7 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
