MSU Athletics

Senior quarterback Austin Gahafer threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a third in his collegiate finale, and the Morehead State football team closed its 2016 season Saturday with a 31-10 victory at Davidson.

The Eagles finished at 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the Pioneer League, winning their fifth straight over Davidson. The Wildcats closed 2016 2-9 overall and 0-8 in the conference.

"It was a nice way to finish the season, and our kids played really hard today," said head coach Rob Tenyer.

Gahafer closed his illustrious career with 11,918 career passing yards and 85 touchdowns and will finish second all-time at the FCS level with 1,844 career passing attempts. Today he connected with senior slot Jake Raymond for a nine-yard score in the first quarter and a 45-yard strike to senior wideout Darius Pritchett in the third period. He also rushed for a 14-yard score early in the third period.

Raymond wrapped up his record-setting career with four catches for 52 yards and had 272 career catches for 2,907 yards, both MSU career marks.

The Eagles gained 438 offensive yards versus Davidson, including 76 rushing yards and a touchdown by freshman Trevor Jones. Jones concluded his first season leading the team in rushing.

On defense, senior linebacker Ryan Bennett was credited with seven stops and finished with 102 for the season. He also concluded his four-year stint with MSU with 296 career stops, good for eighth in program history. Senior safety Brandon Louder led the team with nine stops in his college finale. The defense held the hosts to just 276 total yards and also recovered a fumble by senior lineman Colt Briggs.

Morehead State built a 17-3 halftime lead and increased that to 31-3 before Davidson QB Stockton McGuire scored the game's final TD on a 37-yard run in the fourth quarter.

It marked the final game for 20 senior members of the program.

"We've already had several recruiting meetings, and I am very excited about the future," said Tenyer. "We played a lot of young guys this year who will be even better in 2017."
