Morehead State junior third baseman Alex Stephens was honored as the College Sports Madness Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Week on Feb. 23.
A native of Wheeling, W. Va., Stephens hit .429 with two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI during a three-game sweep at North Carolina Central on opening weekend. Stephens hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, home run) in his only four at-bats in Saturday's 24-4 victory and drove in four runs while scoring three times.
He opened the season by going 2-for-5 with a double in Friday's 4-2 triumph.
Last season, Stephens was named MVP of the OVC Tournament after hitting .500 and leading the Eagles to their first championship since 1993. He finished the 2015 season with a .331 batting average and four homers in 32 games.
Stephens transferred to MSU from Pensacola (Fla.) State College after taking a redshirt season at West Virginia in 2013.
Morehead State faces No. 8 North Carolina State today.
