The Morehead State women's basketball team set a school record with 19 three-pointers as the Eagles cruised to a 103-55 victory over Berea College on Wednesday (Dec. 18) at MSU’s Johnson Arena.
Morehead State, which hadn't played since Dec. 8, halted a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-7. Berea, which competes in the NAIA, used the game as an exhibition. The Mountaineers entered the game ranked first in NAIA Division II in three-point defense at 20 percent but allowed the hosts to hit 19-of-44 from beyond the arc.
The Eagles also tied the Ohio Valley Conference three-point mark set by Tennessee Tech in 2000-01, and it marked the fourth-best single-game total in NCAA Division I history. The 44 three-point attempts and 30 assists for MSU also established school single-game records.
"We have been working extremely hard during this off time," Head Coach Tom Hodges said. "I am happy that the team's hard work paid off and they were rewarded by setting some records. More importantly though was the fact that we played so unselfishly today. Everyone contributed, and we played as a cohesive unit."
Freshman forward Shay Steele was one of six Eagles in double figures in the scoring column. She established a career-high with 17 points and tied her career standard with 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.
Junior guard Terrice Robinson tallied a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists, while sophomore guard Natalie Greenwell drained five three-pointers and tied a career-high with 15 points in her first career starting assignment.
Junior forward Mackenzie Arledge scored a career-best 13 points and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds. Senior guard Shanice Parker registered 13 points, while senior guard Allie Turner knocked down a quartet of three-pointers for a season-high 12 points. Junior guard Almesha Jones, who ranks fourth in the OVC in assists, dished out nine in the game.
Morehead State's bench players outscored the Mountaineer bench, 43-16, while the Eagles held a 46-35 advantage in rebounds. Kaitlynne Smith and Erika Parks each notched 10 points to lead Berea, which shot just 32 percent (17-of-54).
Morehead State finished at 49 percent (35-of-72) efficiency from the field and committed just 10 turnovers.
The Eagles opened the contest on a 10-2 scoring flurry and held a 44-29 advantage at halftime. MSU opened the second half outscoring BC 24-7 as the lead quickly ballooned to more than 30 and held for the rest of the day.
Morehead State is idle until Dec. 30 when it travels to Missouri Valley Conference opponent Southern Illinois for a 7:05 p.m. tipoff.
