Women's Golf Captures William & Mary Invitational

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State women's golf team won the nine-team William & Mary Invitational after firing a 296 in the third-and-final round on Tuesday (September 17) at Plantation Golf Course.

The Eagles (881) finished seven strokes ahead of runner-up Elon (898) in the 54-hole event. Host William & Mary (903) finished third and Richmond (907) fourth. The course played at a par of 71 and yardage of 5,958.

"A victory is always special, and I am extremely proud of our team," MSU Head Coach Stephanie Barker said. "They all handled the challenges of this course well and really had a great mindset."

MSU sophomore Anna Appert Lund, freshman Anna Magnusson and sophomore LinneaScholin all posted 73s on the final day. Sophomore Katie Rice added a 77 and junior Vanessa Bognot rounded out the Eagles' top-five with an 80. Senior AmalieSchottMunck carded a 77 as an individual.

Appert Lund (216) finished second for the second straight tournament. She was just one stroke behind tournament champion SunnaVidisdottir (217) from Elon. Magnusson (219), who tied for fourth, and Scholin (220), who earned a share of sixth, also finished in the top-10 out of 51 golfers.

The 54-hole scores for Appert Lund and Scholin were both career lows. Morehead State's team score of 29-over-par was its best since shooting 20-over-par at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational in 2012.

"There were a countless number of spectators and other competitors who complimented our team the past three days," Barker added. "Everyone had nice things to say about how our team plays the game, represents themselves and how passionate they are towards the sport. As a coach, that was extra special to see."

The Eagles continue their fall schedule September 23-25, when they travel to the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colorado.
