Students Lobby For Higher Ed Funding

My Footpath

The head of the Student Government Association at Morehead State University says student body presidents across the Commonwealth plan to work together this year on behalf of higher education.

Bradley Fyffe says the presidents have been talking about ways to lobby the state legislature to increase funding for Kentucky’s public colleges and universities. Fyffe says they feel they can make a difference by joining forces.

“We thought that it was very imperative that the student body presidents kind of get together and create a common platform and keep a common message that all the universities in the state that we need more funding. That’s something that we can lobby for together and make it really unified so that it will have a more meaningful message. You know, as student body presidents we see higher education as a public good that benefits not only our personal selves but all of the state of Kentucky.” –Bradley Fyffe

Kentucky’s support for higher education has been dropping as a share of the state budget over the last ten years. Kentucky was paying about two-thirds of a student’s costs in 1998. Today, the student is paying about two-thirds.
