MSU Regents Approve Budget

Morehead State University

Morehead State University’s Board of Regents on Thursday (June 5) approved a new budget of more than 153-million dollars. The spending plan includes an increase of 4.9 percent in tuition and fees and 5.1 percent in residence hall rates.

Full-time, in-state undergraduates at MSU this fall will now be paying more than 39-hundred dollars for tuition and over 21-hundred dollars for housing.

Dr. Wayne Andrews is president of Morehead State University.

“The good news for our students is we continue to put a significant amount of institutional money into scholarship support. So, the sticker price for tuition is not the price most of our students pay. In fact, ninety percent of them have some kind of a discount through financial aid.” –Wayne Andrews

Andrews is quick to add he’s concerned about the increasing share of the students’ costs for higher education in Kentucky. At MSU, it has gone from 38 percent in 1998 to 65 percent today.

A member of the Student Government Association at Morehead State University says the higher tuition rate students will be paying is unfortunate but probably unavoidable. Bradley Fyffe is vice-president of administration for the SGA and will serve as the student representative on the Board of Regents this fall.

“We’re never happy to see the tuition increases, but especially with the budget cuts from the state and from the governor’s office, their hands are basically tied.” –Bradley Fyffe

Fyffe says students across Kentucky will be trying to rally support for increased state aid for higher education during the upcoming academic year.
