Kentucky Arts Council’s ‘The Illustrated Word’ Exhibit on Display at Kentucky Crafted: The Market

Kentucky Arts Council

The Kentucky Arts Council’s traveling exhibit, “The Illustrated Word,” will take a brief detour from visiting Kentucky libraries to be featured at Kentucky Crafted: The Market, April 22-23 at the Lexington Convention Center.

“The Illustrated Word” connects visual art and literature with work by 28 Kentucky artists. The artwork in the exhibit ranges from visual interpretations – both literal and metaphorical – of poetry and literature, to artwork that incorporates text as a design element.

One of those artists is Mary Claire O’Neal of Lexington. O’Neal said she is honored to have her work on exhibit at the state’s premiere arena for Kentucky-made art and craft.

“I’m absolutely astounded by the talent in Kentucky, and The Market is an incredible showcase,” O’Neal said. “To have my work there, too, is amazing.”

O’Neal’s piece, titled “Inspired by Walt,” incorporates excerpts from two poems by American writer Walt Whitman, “Passage to India” and “Song of the Redwood Tree.”

“Whitman is one of my favorite poets. I love the American transcendental writers. They believe in more than the physical reality, that we are part of something bigger,” O’Neal said. “Whitman’s poetry is full of transcendental experiences. It’s so wonderful to be able to tie something so dear to my heart – literature – into my art. It was the perfect opportunity.”

Visit the Kentucky Arts Council website for a slideshow of the work on exhibit.

The Market doors open to the general public April 22-23. Hours for The Market are:

April 22, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
