Traffic Advisory: High water impacting state highways in northeast Kentucky

WKEF

Heavy rain today has led to localized flooding across northeast Kentucky that’s impacting state highways. High water has been reported at the following locations:

CARTER COUNTY

KY 1654 at the KY 854 intersection in Rush (mile marker 0) at the Boyd-Carter county line

KY 1 in the Beech Grove area south of Grayson (8-9 mile marker)

KY 174 at Lawton (5-6 mile marker)

KY 2 along Buffalo Creek west of Carter City (11-12 mile marker)

GREENUP COUNTY

KY 784 (Three Prong-Lost Creek area) near the KY 2 intersection (9-10 mile marker)

KY 244 at Raceland (railroad tunnels, mile marker 3.5)

LEWIS COUNTY

KY 989 at the 7 mile marker (Glen Springs) and 12 mile marker (Charters-AA intersection)

KY 1021 at Quincy (2 and 4 mile markers)

KY 344 just west of Kinniconick (15-16 mile marker)

NICHOLAS COUNTY

Water has receded from KY 32, KY 1285, KY 1244, and areas previously closed are now open.

Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 crews have placed high water signs at those locations or have barricaded roads as needed. Motorists are reminded to never drive through high water as even just a few inches of water can float a vehicle.

With continued rain in the forecast, flooded roads could remain overnight or could occur in other areas throughout the week. Motorists should make travel plans accordingly: Seek detours around low-lying areas or roads prone to flooding, and follow the National Weather Service warning when encountering high water – Turn around, don’t drown.

State highway crews will continue to monitor state highways and place or remove high-water warning signs as necessary.
