Volleyball Bests In-State Rival Eastern Kentucky Wednesday Night

Morehead State University

In its final midweek match of the season, Morehead State volleyball continued its winning ways against its in-state rival, downing Eastern Kentucky in straight sets Wednesday night. The Eagles (21-7, 12-3 OVC) defeated the Colonels (9-20, 4-11) by scores of 25-9, 26-24, and 25-23.

The victory gives Morehead State its 21st overall victory and 12th Ohio Valley Conference victory, equaling last season's overall win total while exceeding last year's 11 OVC wins.

Propelling the Eagles, the junior outside hitter duo of Olivia Lohmeier and Lauren Rokey led the match in kills, tallying 35 combined for the match-exceeding foe Eastern Kentucky's team total by six kills. Lohmeier led the way with 19 while Rokey added 16 as the two attackers both hit .300-plus from outside.

Also recording attack efficiencies greater than .300 were freshman right-side hitter Abby Hulsman and sophomore middle blocker Mia Swearingen, who hit .300 and .357, respectively. Both attackers totaled seven kills apiece, slotting behind Lohmeier and Rokey on the stat sheet.

Leading the offense for Morehead State, freshman setter Bridget Bessler passed out 43 of the team's 50 assists on the night, averaging 14.33 helpers per set. She also added a career-best 14 digs, collecting her eighth double-double of the season.

Elsewhere defensively, two others joined Bessler with double-digit dig totals. Sophomore libero Allison Whitten scooped up a team-high 17 digs while redshirt senior defensive specialist Danielle McCarson collected 10 digs. Finishing just shy of double-figures, sophomore defensive specialist Olivia Montelisciani scooped up eight balls.

At the net, Morehead State collected five total blocks, including four solo. Swearingen barricaded the net, tying a career-high with three solo blocks, totaling four blocks on the night. In addition, deterring shots were Hulsman and Lohmeier, tallying an assist and solo block, respectively.

In service, the Eagles added another four service aces Wednesday night led by a season-high three aces from Lohmeier. Landing the team's fourth service ace was redshirt sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Hodges.

For Eastern Kentucky, freshman outside hitter Abby Noll recorded a team-best 18 kills while senior libero Dena Tekavec collected a match-best 18 digs.

Morehead State returns to the court for the final time in the 2019 regular season Saturday, travelling to another in-state foe. The Eagles take on Murray State with first serve set for 5 p.m. ET.
