Protest agitator arrested

Rowan County Detention Center

A man who tried to incite violence at a Black Lives Matter event in Morehead last weekend was arrested early Thursday morning.

61-year-old Marty Horton can be seen in videos from the protest standing on the sidewalk in front of Veterans’ Square, yelling racist slurs and using obscene hand gestures.   Although Horton did approach several of the protestors and members of the press in an aggressive manner, the event remained peaceful.

Authorities say they received a complaint from a local restaurant Wednesday evening about Horton and pulled him over as he left the establishment.

He was arrested for driving under the influence, driving with an open alcoholic beverage container, and failure to wear a seatbelt.  Horton also faces two charges of trafficking in a controlled substance, assaulting a correctional employee and cultivation of marijuana.

Horton is lodged in the Rowan County Detention Center where is being held on a $2,500 cash bond.  Horton is currently on probation and may face additional charges.
