Rowan County Public Library hosts annual Library Card Month

Samantha Morrill

September marks the annual Library Card Signup Month at the Rowan County Public Library. This event will run through the end of the month, when participants can sign up for a library card and enter for a chance to win a basket filled with books and reading-related treats.

Morgan Mullins, communications manager at RCPL, said there are many benefits to owning a library card in addition to being able to check out books, movies, and games.

“All of our other services that you can access such as our digital applications, our eBook readers. We have Mango Languages if you want to use a new language. We have Canopy if you want to watch TV or movies at home. We have the New York Times All Access so that you can get direct access to news as well as games and some of their other periodical publications,” said Mullins.

Mullins also said the library hosts many different programs and having a library card is a good way to be in the know about these opportunities.

“So, when someone pulls that card out and they say, ‘Oh, I’m going to this program at the library,’ then we’re hoping that they will have friends who are interested in that topic that go, ‘Oh, really? I did not know the library did that,’” said Mullins.

Additionally, people with a library card have access to porch services, meet-up locations, and the Bookmobile that travels all throughout the county.

Participants who already have a library card can still enter the drawing by checking in at the front desk to ensure their contact details are up to date. Replacement library cards will also be available throughout the month free of charge. The raffle winner will be selected at the month's end and notified within a week.
