According to a 2024 FBI report, Kentuckians lose more than $74 million a year to scams. Governor Andy Beshear’s administration has created a new website to fight against fraudsters. Beshear said there are always new and evolving scams, and they are getting more sophisticated.
“We’re launching a new website, stopscams.ky.gov. This site and accompanying resources and different events we’re going to do are going to help us identify more scams, to more people before they fall for them. It’s going to help us make sure that they can be reported so these people can be found and arrested for the criminal that they are, and that we can do everything we can to get people’s money back,” said Beshear
Beshear said there are some common themes to watch out for.
“Remember, oftentimes, these scammers are going to use emotion. Either fear, you owe something, and they’re going to come to your house and arrest you unless you pay it. That’s not how law enforcement works on fines. The other is often exhilaration. You’ve just won something, but you can only claim it over the next x number of minutes. That’s why that pause is so important,” said Beshear
The website was made with help from the Public Protection Cabinet, the Better Business Bureau, and AARP.
