MSU officials keep safety in mind amid five ongoing construction projects

Samantha Morrill

Morehead State University’s campus is in the middle of a makeover. In the past year, residence halls have been remodeled, instructional buildings updated, and parking lots built. Currently, there are four active construction sites on campus and one at the university farm.

With students back on campus, the institution is prioritizing their safety. Jay Morgan, MSU president, said he feels confident that the safety measures put in place will protect students and faculty members.

“We gate off with big gates, ten foot high or so, all the construction zones. We try to mark where the ingress and egresses are. We have construction and material, places where we place construction and materials, and it’s really out of the way of the mainstream traffic,” said Morgan.

Additionally, construction vehicles will be routed to avoid busy pedestrian areas. Morgan asked students to remain aware of their surroundings and to follow all posted signage.

“I would simply relay to our campus, and we’ve tried to communicate this in multiple venues, I think everything is safe, just be careful if you’re out walking around,” said Morgan.

Prefontaine Hall is expected to be completed in the fall of 2026, the new science and engineering building in fall of 2027, and the dorm to replace Normal Hall in spring of ’27.

Officials said the university to working with the Capital Planning Advisory Board to obtain more funding for additional projects in the coming years.
