Kentucky health officials focused on combating substance use disorder

Last year, over 80,000 Americans died from overdose-related causes and over 1,400 of those occurred in the Commonwealth. The Our Healthy Kentucky Home initiative aims to lower that number by educating people about the dangers of substance use disorder and the resources available to combat it.

Dr. Steven Stack with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services said there are lifestyle changes like diet and exercise that are important in helping people along the recovery process.

“Whole foods boost brain health and mood which can reduce some of the physical and mental symptoms of withdrawal,” Stack said. “Even small dietary changes can make a big difference. Along with diet, regular physical activity is essential to the recovery journey.”

Stack added people should surround themselves with others who care for them and their health.

“It’s also important to build a strong sober network,” said Stack. “This is a trusted group of people who provide practical advice, emotional support, and understand your journey to a successful recovery.”

He added there are numerous free resources across the state for those struggling with addiction. There are over 600 locations in the state where Naloxone, a drug used to stop opioid overdoses, can be obtained free of charge. There is also the KY Help call center providing round-the clock assistance and resources for those seeking it.
