As Morehead State University removes and replaces existing buildings across campus, school administrators are requesting funding for more construction projects. President of MSU, Dr. Jay Morgan made several requests to the Capital Planning Advisory Board, which makes funding recommendations to each branch of government. If approved, the money would go to build four new facilities across campus.
The priority for new construction is a replacement to Reed Hall, which Morgan said serves many crucial programs.
“Our vision here is to consolidate and put a number of academic programs into this building. Agriculture, psychology, surveying, construction management, computer technology, informational systems, that we think are very workforce based. They drive our economy, and we believe that they’re much needed.”
Morgan added, because of its concrete structure, Reed Hall would be incredibly difficult to renovate to modern standards. MSU officials requested over $79 million for the new applied sciences building. More than $154 million in general project funding was requested for four new facilities on MSU’s campus.
Morgan said the school’s infrastructure needs many improvements.
“We’ve got to replace a very aging infrastructure on our campus. We’re also, over the next couple of years, working with our campus and board to replace several more buildings and reduce even further. Our goal with an aging campus has been to move through and either renovate, reorganize, reduce it and build new, and go forward,” said Morgan.
As a part of a six-year capital plan for 2026-2032, MSU officials hope to meet current and future needs of the university’s students and service area. In addition to a replacement for Reed Hall, funding would go to a new agriculture sciences building, and expansions to the space science center and the CHER building.
Morgan said funding is also being requested for additional new residence halls, ADA upgrades, and an exterior renovation to Nunn Hall.
