The old Rowan County post office has recently been purchased by local real estate agent and auctioneer Damon Ballinger. Ballinger, who also owns the adjacent Stargazer Lounge, wants to create a common area where people in the community can relax in the heart of Morehead’s entertainment district.
Ballinger said once the building is open to the public, anyone looking to host an event can use the property free of charge excluding music fees and event insurance.
“In the meantime, it’s just going to be event space. It’s got very large rooms inside so it can be used for birthday parties, football or Super Bowl parties,” said Ballinger. “Any type of gatherings like office meetings, wedding receptions. I mean, it’s got a high variety of uses with the size of the rooms and how tall the ceilings are.”
Ballinger also encourages anybody looking to perform in the area to utilize the stage at the back of the property. He said he wants to give anyone willing to share their talent with the community the opportunity to do just that.
“You don’t have to be a big-money individual. If you’re a band or if you’re a musician that just wants to highlight your talents to the area, you have a chance to do so,” he added.
Ballinger said parts of the building should be ready for use in August. He added that those looking to host an event must open it to the public.
Ballinger’s long-term goal is for another restaurant to open on the property. However, this would require the installation of an industrial kitchen.
