More rainfall is expected this week after continued storms

National Weather Service

The Morehead area has experienced continued rainfall this week, and forecasters said the rain could continue throughout the weekend. Storms this week could produce heavy rainfall in eastern and southeastern areas of the Commonwealth.

Pete Geogerian is Service Hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. He said rainfall may fluctuate.

“That shifts a little bit southeast for Thursday, and Friday we’re not under a risk of excessive rainfall. So, a little bit more of a break in the action Friday, and generally as well as Saturday. Sunday, we start to get another system that creeps in from the west. That marginal risk for excessive rainfall will return,” said Geogerian.

After persistent rainfall, forecasters are cautioning people to stay aware of weather alerts. Monitoring weather alerts and having multiple methods of receiving alerts is crucial to staying safe during weather events.

Geogerian said flash flooding is the main thing to watch for after heavy rainfall.

“Flash flooding, that’s the bigger concern. Not as concerned for larger creek flooding overall, or any smaller rivers. We’re generally not expecting that big of a rainfall footprint with any of this stuff,” said Geogerian.

Officials said isolated incidents should not be ruled out, but flooding is overall not likely for the rest of the week. After Thursday’s showers and thunderstorms, Geogerian said the system should move southeast toward Pike County.
