Officials detail progress on projects in Rowan County

Samantha Morrill

Officials from the Rowan County Fiscal Court have updates on some projects in the county. This includes changes to the new county park and the start of construction on a new senior center. They report the new facility should be operational within the next year, if not sooner.

Harry Clark, Rowan County Judge Executive, said after years of difficulty obtaining building materials following the COVID-19 pandemic, he is pleased to announce there have been no hold-ups with the new senior center.

“We have a construction meeting once every two weeks,” said Clark. “I just had one last week specifically ask those questions, ‘was there anything?’ Nothing looked like it would have to be backordered or short of any material.”

The cost of the project has remained on track. Clark said at the time of bidding construction crews predicted $25,000 would be needed to dig deep enough to pour the foundation of the center, a repercussion of the widening of US 60 many years ago.

Clark added he is optimistic about the changes coming to the county and enthusiasm is high among the many people involved in the efforts.

“We’re just excited about what’s going on in Rowan County. We’ve still got a lot of things going on. The senior center, the park. Just a lot of stuff happening,” Clark said. “We’re really fortunate and excited.”

Clark said the county park has also undergone upgrades including a new gazebo and complete restroom facilities. He added the basketball courts in the park are being constructed and should be ready for use in the coming months.
