Frontier Housing to build five houses in Morehead to address affordable housing

Em Kemper

In efforts to create more affordable housing, Frontier Housing plans to create five single family houses at the end of Rodburn Hollow Road in Morehead. Before the houses can be built, they need buyers and before that can happen, the lots need access to infrastructure like water, sewage and the road itself. To help pay for this preliminary work, Frontier Housing is working with the City of Morehead to apply for a Community Development Block Grant, or CDBG.

CDB grants provide assistance to communities for revitalizing neighborhoods, expanding affordable housing, creating economic opportunities, and improving facilities and services. Frontier Housing President and CEO Manning Beavin said they hope to have the application submitted to the state sometime this summer.

“And hopefully the state is able to move fairly quickly to approve that and that perhaps we can have approval sometime in the fall and then water and sewer development and the road development should be able to move pretty quickly. So, then we’re looking at probably building homes in 2026,” said Manning Beavin.

Manning Beavin said the decision to build single family homes as opposed to apartment buildings was made in part to preserve the look and feel of the Rodburn neighborhood.

“That neighborhood is very clearly a single-family residential neighborhood. That land sits at the very end of the road. Adding a lot of households to the end of that road would put a burden on that street. It felt like, from a number of standpoints, that single family homeownership development was a more appropriate use of that land,” said Manning Beavin.

The five homes will have about one-fourth of an acre of land each and will be built based on the homebuyer’s wants and needs. There are a number of different blueprints for homes with different combinations of bathrooms and bedrooms to best suit the size of home needed.
