Details are being shared about renovations at a facility in Morehead, bridging a gap in community sports. The Carl D. Perkins Community Center, a facility for community events and gatherings, is adding a basketball court for youth league games featuring new technology.

Matthew Hamilton, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Morehead, said owning this facility brings new opportunities.

“We can go back to starting tournaments. We can host travel ball. We can bring tourism dollars to the city of Morehead. We can’t do it all in this one facility, but as we grow, we will add more. It is a great step into introducing tourism-based sports back into our community,” said Hamilton.

The center will have all new equipment, including suspended goals that can be adjusted for all ages, and a durable rubber court. Hamilton said the multipurpose room will continue to host community events, and the court will be open for league sports this winter. He said adding a court would be a first for the city.

“It’ll be a great addition to the city. The city has never owned its own basketball facility, ever. This will not be a huge facility like Laughlin, but it is a brick-and-mortar place where we can actually have indoor basketball that is our own. So, it’s a big deal,” said Hamilton.

Community sports are also receiving updates in the city park, with the playground renovation wrapping up and a permanent pickle ball and tennis court planned to repurpose some of the existing skate park.
