Morehead Utility Plant Board continues development after new water plant finished

Alex Standifer

At a recent city council meeting, the public received updates about the new water treatment plant. The plant finished construction in April of this year, and Morehead Utility Plant Board officials said they have more goals for the facility.

Holly McGrath-Rosas, General Manager with the Morehead Utility Plant Board, said the development of the plant and further projects were a part of a multi-phase plan.

“Phase one was the actual water treatment plant, phase two was the raw water intake, and the tank was the phase 3, which is being built right now. The tank has to help support the system,” said McGrath-Rosas.

She added having the facility up and running required additional construction.

“One of the things we wanted to do when we built the water plant was to build the infrastructure that accommodates it. If you build infrastructure and you don’t accommodate further growth, then you come into a whole lot more issues both economically and residentially,” said McGrath-Rosas.

Phase 4 should progress next year. It will replace existing pipes along KY 801 and extend them north and south.

The old plant and raw water intake, constructed in the 1960s, are set to be demolished soon, and plans are still in the works for the Morehead wastewater plant.
