As storms and heavy rainfall continue throughout the region this week, high water and damaging winds are possible. Christian Cassell, one of the lead meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Jackson said the mixture of the predicted torrential rainfall and the already saturated soil can create flooding in certain areas.

Cassell said urban areas may be at greater risk.

“Urban areas are a concern. The water tends to run quickly off of the asphalt. And poor drainage areas the water tends to pile up quickly; those low water crossings that are typically susceptible,” said Cassell.

Cassell also said there are ways people can prepare for this kind of weather.

“The big thing is to have a reliable way, whether that be your favorite radio station, TV station, all hazards weather radio, changing their cell phone to receive severe weather alters, all of those ae good ways to be aware if we were to issue a flash flood warning for your area,” said Cassell.

Officials said anyone who lives in an area with a history of flooding or that is typically prone to flooding should be on the lookout for high and rising waters.

There is a chance of showers and storms throughout Wednesday. The chance of precipitation continues Thursday but is expected to wrap up by Friday.
