Morehead fire station construction is coming soon as officials share new designs

City of Morehead

New design images for an upcoming project in Morehead were recently revealed. Officials said the new Morehead Fire Station, designed by Trace Creek Construction, will have modern features that allow firefighters to respond safely and quickly.

Jeff Anderson, Fire Chief for the City of Morehead, said the current station lacked many important features for years. He added the new building will be built to modern standards.

“The building is going to be designed from a hot, warm, to cold zone. Which is what the future fire station looks like if you go to any conference or read any articles about fire stations now, that’s the whole concept. Getting them out of the hot zone, getting them deconned, get clean clothes back on, getting into their living areas, and be able to respond to the next one,” said Anderson.

Anderson said the safety features of the station will allow workers to efficiently decontaminate, making sure the harmful chemicals from fires do not follow firefighters home. The most recent mockup includes a few changes. Anderson said the most notable change is to the angle of the roof, which altered the size of some rooms.

“We have changed the footprint, barely, the interior footprint. The locker room changed just a little bit. And actually, gained a little maintenance room or utility room, whatever we want, and still had the locker rooms functional. That’s all that changed,” said Anderson.

The station will be located on West Main Street, across from the Rowan County Courthouse. Once the project begins, the building should be in place within 14 months.
