The third annual Heart and Soil Garden Fest, hosted by the Painted Hills Garden Club, is set to take place this month. Organizers said the event aims to educate people and foster a love for gardening.

President of the Painted Hills Garden Club, Dee Biebighauser, expects a sizeable turnout this year and looks forward to teaching people about the many ways they can produce and manage their own garden.

“This year we’re kind of focusing on gardening for food and profit because, with the economy the way it is, growing your own food can help your budget a lot. Not only that, but it gives you something you can share with your neighbors,” said Biebighauser.

Biebighauser said anybody, regardless of their knowledge of gardening, is welcome to participate in the festivities. She added gardening can be an affordable alternative to the grocery store.

“Gosh, you can just buy a $2 packet of seeds, and you’ll have beans all summer,” said Biebighauser. “Or tomatoes, oh my gosh. If you plant a cherry tomato, I guarantee you’ll have tomatoes all summer; they get huge.”

There will be door prizes given throughout the day as well as a silent auction. In addition to several guest speakers, vendors will be present at the event.

The Heart and Soil Garden Fest will take place at the Morehead Conference Center on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
