Morehead Fire Department accepting applications for new full-time positions

Samantha Morrill

Emergency Services are looking to expand in Rowan County. The Morehead Fire Department recently opened positions for three new full-time firefighters.

The application deadline for candidates is July 1. Jeff Anderson is the Fire Chief for the City of Morehead. He said more first responders are critically needed for the community.

“The Morehead Fire Department hired six full time firefighters almost three years ago. The idea was that we could expand when needed,” said Anderson. “We have researched that over the last couple years and just know that there is a great need for the third person on the engine every shift.”

Chief Anderson said applicants need to have a high school diploma and an up-to-date Candidate Physical Ability Test to be considered. He said qualifications beyond that help, but they are looking for the best candidates in general.

“A good mind and a good, strong, body are the first two things that we would like to have. If they have experience, that’s just a bonus. We can teach them also. Not necessarily will we pick people who have experience, just the best candidates,” said Anderson.

Preferred qualifications for the role include 300 hours of training, an EMT certification, and certificates I and II from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress.

Anderson notes that the department will choose the best people to fill the opening for each of the three 24-hour shifts, and additional training will be provided after the selections are made on July 1.
