Summer art camp for kids available in Rowan County

Sydney Graham

The Rowan County Arts Center is once again hosting their Kid’s Summer Art Camp. But this time, there will be different material the kids attending the camp will be learning.

Waylan Coffey, Arts and Cultural Director for Morehead Rowan County Tourism, said this year the camp will be a little more art and a little less craft.

“Of course, the camp is still a lot of arts and crafts, but we wanted to put some intentionality behind what the kids are learning. And so, they’re going to be learning like real art techniques along the way, so some color theory techniques, some self-portraiture, print making, watercolor techniques, so just a little bit again layered intentionality in the arts and crafts that they’re doing,” said Coffey.

Coffey said teaching arts to children is an important endeavor, which can spark life-long passions and inspirations. He said he wants this year’s arts camp to teach children valuable lessons, as well as give them a place to explore art organically.

“Art is not always celebrated in education anymore, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t, it just depends, and it’s great to have a community space where kids can come in and learn art skills, art techniques, art education, because creativity goes a long way in terms of peoples inspiration and learning art at an early age tends to bring art throughout your life,” said Coffey.

There will be two sessions of the camp, running from June 16-20, and June 23-27. The first session has already filled up, but the second one for children aged 3rd-5th grade still has space available. Children can be registered on the Rowan County Art Center’s website, and registration is not limited to children living in Morehead or Rowan County.
