According to weather forecasters, Morehead and other parts of eastern Kentucky can expect chances of rainfall and thunderstorms over the course of this week. This weekend, isolated showers or storms should peak in the afternoon and evening. Alongside rainfall, the high temperatures for this week and into the weekend will be below normal.
Unsettled rain and weather patterns have been seen throughout the month of May in parts of the region. John Pelton, forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said this type of weather is common during this time of year.
“In May you can expect to get some severe weather. Typically, you can get cooler periods of time kind of like we had recently, though it has been a little more extended than what we might typically get. As I mentioned, you can get showers and thunderstorms off and on typically through May. That adds up to averaging to the wettest month of the year,” said Pelton.
Weather officials said high water in poor drainage areas in southeastern parts of the state can result in possible flash flooding. Pelton added that flash flooding and high waters are to be expected during the month of May.
“Getting high water issues or flash flooding is not uncommon either for May. There was a flash flood in May of 2004 that is kind of one of the historical ones in some areas. It’s kind of typical; it’s happened in the past, the flash flooding and severe weather in May,” said Pelton.
Looking ahead, Morehead and parts of the region can expect to see milder temperatures by the middle of next week.
