Officials with the University of Kentucky went before the Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Committee to discuss plans for upcoming construction projects on the campus. The university plans to increase parking capacity, as well as renovating recreation space on campus.
Jennifer Fraker, Director of Government Relations at the University of Kentucky, said the university’s growth has meant some of these things have become neglected.
“Growth from our hospital expansion and capital projects will eliminate roughly 1,900 parking spaces. Meanwhile, as you’ve certainly been aware, rising student enrollment is also pushing our campus recreation facilities beyond capacity,” said Fraker.
She said the campus needs to make these expansions to help accommodate the growing student population. She said recreation is important to healthy and balanced student life.
“Our data indicates also that students who engage with recreation facilities at least once or more times, are 7% more likely to stay enrolled. Finally, we’ll fully replace lost parking spaces and even create a small surplus, improving campus logistics for everyone,” said Fraker.
The projects were approved by the committee, and construction is expected to begin soon. The planned end date is in late 2026, with a tentative grand opening date set for December 31 of that year.
Murray State University officials also attended the meeting, seeking review for a project to replace the roof of the Curris Center.
