There are new plans to provide citizens in Rowan County with access to expanded recreation facilities.
Chuck Mraz, Chairman of the Morehead Rowan County Recreation Board, said there are plans underway currently to renovate the Carl D. Perkins Center, adding a basketball court to the building. The court would be for community use and host youth basketball games.
“There also is a plan at some point down the road, which I think I’m excited about too as well, to add onto that building so a second basketball floor can be placed in there too as well. The city does not own its own basketball facility currently, they have to rent facilities or at least borrow facilities from the school district to play a lot of our youth league basketball games,” said Mraz.
Following the dissolution of the agreement between the local government and Morehead State University regarding use of the Laughlin Health Building, some wondered what the future of public recreation would look like in Rowan County. Mraz said this is the solution to that concern.
“They used to rent the Laughlin building, of course, from the university. The city and county used to rent that building, and so the money that they’re not spending on that building anymore can be used in terms of spending it towards the renovation of the Carl Perkins Center,” said Mraz.
Mraz said the added space will be a welcome addition and will work in tandem with the new county park in terms of adding community recreation space. The new park is slated to have multiple baseball fields which can also be used for adult and youth league games. He said the county will be reusing equipment from the former park which was located across the road from Walmart. Mraz said this repurposing will save the city and county even more money.
