Meteorologists predict thunderstorms and rain through the weekend for eastern Kentucky

National Weather Service

Forecasts show a weekend of thunderstorms and rain ahead for Rowan County. Officials predict these storms to be smaller and less consequential than many of the previous systems the area has weathered this year.

Jonathan Marcus, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said the storms won’t last past the weekend.

“It’s not like the steady shield of precipitation that we’ve gotten sometimes earlier this year so the totals may vary, but we are generally looking at between one and two inches of rain over the next three days.”

Marcus said a few of the storms may be on the stronger side, possibly producing some frequent lightning, torrential downpours and potentially some damaging wind gusts.

Marcus said while flooding is possible it shouldn’t be too severe.

“We’re not expecting any significant widespread rises on the rivers, but in locations that are prone, to where if they get heavy rain there’s like a blocked culvert or something, that could potentially create localized flooding issue,” said Marcus.

Marcus said that by the end of Saturday the worst of the thunderstorms will have come and gone. On Sunday a cold front should arrive, and the area will start to dry. More information on upcoming weather is available at weather.gov.
