MSU’s 13th woman’s basketball coach has come home to stay

Alex Standifer

Morehead State University’s 13th woman’s basketball head coach has been appointed. Ashton Feldhaus previously coached at Missouri Western. There she found herself as head coach, guiding her team to the NCAA tournament.

Feldhaus, a Madison County native, said it’s good to be back in the Bluegrass State.

“Home. It feels like home. Super excited obviously. I’ve been gone for twelve years, which feels like forever but, yeah. This feels like home and these people feel like family. So, super, super comfortable being back here, that’s for sure,” said Feldhaus.

No stranger to soaring high, Feldhaus earned her bachelor's degree in communications and a master’s degree in family and consumer science as a Skyhawk at the University of Tennessee Martin. As a player there she averaged 11 points a game her senior year.

Prior to taking the reins at Missouri Western, Feldhaus served five seasons as the top assistant and associate head coach for Eckerd College in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Feldhaus said she is excited to work with MSU’s dedicated staff, student athletes and community to build a championship level program the Eagle family can be proud of.

Feldhaus said there are going to be a lot of changes for the team.

“I take a different approach to it. We focus very heavily on relationships. Style of play is going to be really, really different. It’s going to be a major adjustment, but it’s going to be fun. We approach everything we do with fun, and family, and team,” said Feldhaus. “I think it’s going to be different, but I think it’s going to be exciting.”

Strategically she envisions her team as one with a blue-collar approach, finding open threes and layups to go alongside a defense capable of getting stops.

When asked about concerns surrounding the transfer portal, Feldhaus said the challenge lies in it being open to coaches everywhere, but noted there are kids with high character who want to be a part of Morehead State University and are willing to build from the ground up.

She added that when you have the right people in place, you can usually find some winning along with it.
