A historic cabin could be relocated to downtown Morehead

Anabel Peterman

The Morehead History and Railroad Museum recently proposed the relocation of a historic building in downtown Morehead. A cabin, originally constructed in 1835, is one of the oldest buildings in the county. The museum would like the structure to sit near the Moonlight School and Stage off East First Street.

Steven Young, current president of the museum, said the location is important because it’s a historic area and will make running three tours easier for the museum.

“We have limited membership, and we already have an agreement with Morehead State University to take tours through the moonlight school. So, trying to do that and run the museum and take tours through the cabin will require some effort to say the least,” Young said.

The structure currently sits in Rockwall Hollow, just outside the city, and will have to be disassembled for transfer.

“Each piece is numbered, and then it is carefully deconstructed and taken piece by piece, transported to the site, and then using the numbering system they all go back in place again just the way it was when it was taken apart,” Young said.

Young said the goal is to have the cabin reconstructed downtown by the end of the summer or early fall.
