Forecasters warn there is a chance of severe weather throughout the region Friday and into the weekend.
Mike Ginnick, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, said even though it’s projected to be only partly cloudy over the weekend, this makes severe storms more likely.
“It’s kind of counterintuitive when you see sunny skies you’re not really thinking severe weather, but most of the times the environment out ahead of a system is favorable when the skies are partly cloudy or mostly sunny,” said Ginnick.
Ginnick said there is a chance of heavy rainfall to accompany this storm system, but that it likely won’t be enough to cause major flooding issues.
“It is starting to slow down. So, as the system speed slows down the risk of flooding could go up. I do believe there is a marginal risk for excessive rainfall that was issued by one of our parent agencies,” said Ginnick.
He added the best thing people can do is to make sure they stay up to date on the latest forecasts to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.
