Rowan County clerk officials offer alternatives to long lines in March

Samantha Morrill

County clerk officials warn that anyone who needs to stop in for vehicle registration this month may find themselves waiting in longer lines than normal.

Brian Mason, frontline clerk at the Rowan County Clerk’s office, said March is an especially busy month.

“March is busy because you have your birthdays, that’s normal just like every other month. But we also have any weighted tags, for like big trucks, anything like that. We have trailer tags, like utility trailers, box trailers. You also have your campers and travel trailers as well this month. So, it can get really busy in here,” said Mason.

However, Mason said the clerk’s office has a few workarounds.

“You can register your vehicle online. You do have to have your VIN number and your title number, and as long as your address is correct and your insurance company has reported your insurance to the state that month then you're fine, it will let you renew online,” said Mason.

The website to renew online is drive.ky.gov, and Mason said clerks are usually available via the phone if anyone runs into problems and requires assistance. In addition, any weighted tags must be renewed in person, not online.

For those in-person visits, Mason said the office is typically the busiest on the last of the month, as people tend to put renewing their plates off until the last moment. To avoid lines, he recommends coming in in the middle of the month, preferably during the middle of the week.
