Community partnerships and opioid abatement funds bring about new Rowan County domestic violence shelter

Samantha Morrill

Rowan County has $661,000 in opioid abatement funds as a result of House Bill 427. The Rowan County Fiscal Court has been careful in releasing the money, due to strict requirements on how it must be used. However, the court recently voted to release $179,000 to go toward another Doves of Gateway domestic abuse shelter.

Judge Executive Harry Clark said the project is possible through community partnerships.

“It’s a house that U.K. Saint Claire has actually offered up for free. Frontier Housing has offered to do modifications to this house to get it up to a standard,” said Clark. “So, at the end of the day what you need to know and you need to vote on is it’s a $179,000 request. I believe it’s legitimate and I believe deserving of our attention.”

Doves of Gateway is a non-profit specializing in providing support for those who have experienced or are undergoing any sort of domestic violence.

Clark said the development of another shelter qualifies for opioid abatement funding.

“Most of their folks are displaced as a result of drug use in the home or some reason associated with opioids,” said Clark.

Officials said the price of the renovation was raised $20,000 from the initial quote and note that it is possible for it to rise again.
