Governor Andy Beshear has signed a proclamation to recognize Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kentucky.

Governor Beshear said the week, ending March 7, is an opportunity to empower Kentuckians to take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families and their communities from the potential impacts of severe weather.

“Let’s just take this week to remember all the disasters we’ve been hit by, but how each time we’ve been better prepared, and how if all of our families are better prepared we can have better outcomes each time,” said Beshear.

Kentucky’s February storm marked the state’s 13th federally declared disaster since Beshear has taken office. Severe Weather Awareness week has a separate focus for each day of its duration. The theme for Monday is lightning safety, followed by hail and wind safety, warning reception, tornado safety, and flood safety.

The governor said Kentucky partners, including the national weather service, will be urging people to participate.

“Throughout the week these folks will emphasize the importance of having a family emergency plan, putting together an emergency supply kit, and staying informed about weather alerts and warnings. I urge all Kentuckians to take the time to review their emergency plans. If you don’t have one, make one,” said Beshear.

Wednesday of Severe Weather Awareness week will include the annual statewide tornado drill which will take place at 10:07 a.m.
