This month, Governor Andy Beshear gave an update on the federal Low-Income Household Water Assistance program. Officials said Team Kentucky has provided more than $412 million in clean drinking water, clean water systems, and sewer access to almost 100,000 homes in the Commonwealth.
Beshear said clean drinking water is a basic human right, and he is proud that Kentucky was the first state to get federal funds to Kentuckians struggling to pay their water bills.
“We appreciate Congress authorizing this first national water assistance program, which has allowed us to serve more than 38,900 households in just the last seven months,” said Beshear.
Beshear said his team moved quickly to assist Kentuckians by utilizing funds from an existing program instead of creating a new system. Officials report the Better Kentucky plan, which was announced in 2021, includes $500 million for the Cleaner Water Program. This month, Beshear announced the Commonwealth has used all the federal funding appropriated for the initiative.
Beshear said Team Kentucky worked quickly to address the needs of its families.
“We restored over 2,120 water connections and prevented over 23,300 disconnections from occurring. We also helped secure rate reductions for more than 19,320 households,” said Beshear.
