Winter weather conditions coming back to the Commonwealth

National Weather Service

Many Kentucky areas are still recovering from recent flooding, and according to the National Weather Service, Extreme Cold and Winter Weather conditions are also expected this week.

Jane Marie Wix is a Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson. She said temperatures will be 10-20 degrees lower than normal, and 3-5 inches of snow are possible.

“It looks like most of Kentucky will see that, yeah. So, it’s going to be across the entire state. Right now, it’s setting up where the highest amount of accumulation is going to go right across the central part of the state, like from west to east. That could shift just a little bit, but pretty much everyone is expected to see some snow across the state,” said Wix.

Wix said though the soil will still be saturated, the upcoming snow will be dry and will not contribute to rainwater levels. She warns that temperatures will stay below freezing overnight, so existing floodwater will freeze on roads. She urges drivers to be cautious.

“Make sure on the roadways that you’re being careful on the roadways, especially if they haven’t been cleared off yet. We do still have a lot of running water across our roads, and as we get cold overnight that can freeze, and that will be the case during this event, as well. It’s going to be cold overnight, well below freezing,” said Wix.

In Morehead, snow is expected to begin Tuesday night and end Thursday morning. Temperatures will rise back to normal levels over the weekend. More information is available at weather.gov.
