A local organization is holding a toy and hygiene item drive to gather supplies for vulnerable community members this holiday season.

Gateway House is collecting items at Morehead Fire Department Station 2 through December 13, and all donations will go to families in need.

Marilyn Smith, Executive Director of Gateway House Homeless Shelter, said there are many different types of hygiene items needed.

“We can use any hygiene products that you can use, in your home, times 26. We need shampoo, hair conditioner, shaving cream, razors, soap, combs, brushes, that type of item. We also need feminine hygiene products,” said Smith.

She said any toys collected will go to the children of families in their programs, and that while new toys are preferred, gently used ones will also be accepted. She said they are always appreciative of donations for children, especially children’s books.

Smith added that holidays present unique challenges to a community’s most vulnerable.

“The holidays are tough for many people, but it seems like they’re especially tough for those who are unsheltered. Most people, as they’re gathering around with their family and having meals, you know, those at the shelter don’t have that, and it just seems like it just, the holidays are difficult for many that we work with,” said Smith.

This is just one of many programs held throughout the year to help Morehead’s vulnerable populations. More information about this and other ways to help can be found on the Gateway House Facebook Page.
